Description:
Kirk Larsen is an associate professor of History at Brigham Young University. He specializes in the history of modern China and Korea. Larsen discusses his book,
Tradition, Treaties, and Trade: Qing Imperialism and Chosŏn Korea, 1850-1910. In it, he examines the relationship between China and Korea in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to argue that Qing officials during this time did not simply cling to traditional Chinese models of international relations. Rather, they actively adopted colonial practices that were regularly employed by Western colonial powers, such as drafting of unequal treaties, establishing self-governing concessions, and asserting extraterritoriality.
